Resolution vs. intent

new-years-resolution-appleIt’s a strange custom we have, resolutions at the New Year.  About 10 years ago, I took a tip from my daughter: “Aim small and succeed.” Since then, several excellent small resolutions have become part of my life:

  • Only eat good chocolate
  • No biopics
  • Keep a bottle of water in the car
  • Always pee before leaving the house

Those last two sort of go together.

This year, after seeing the movie Hyde Park over the holidays, I decided to add: No movies with voice overs. Guess I’ll have to watch more trailers before selecting my movies.

But for serious New Years’ thoughts, I prefer the image of intent. I like the idea of having an intent for the year, and this year, after watching my grandson explore the world with unwavering focus, it is to be more present, to fully experience whatever I do. We’ll see how it goes.

Larry battingAnd Larry, quoting Nassim Taleb quoting Warren Buffet has an investment tip:

“Only invest in companies that are so wonderful they can be run by an idiot, because sooner or later they will.”

Any other tips out there?

When I saw this resolution (not New Year’s but close) I thought this is to be my new motto!
Lovely post. Happy to get back in.

  2. Yes!! I like that very much, but too deep for my New Year’s criteria. You’re right–a better motto. And thanks for brining the problem with the blog to my attention. Happy New Year, Simone.
